The date for the election of the President of the Korean American Federation of Los Angeles (KAFLA) has been finalized.
The organization has lowered the election cost by 20%, but the candidate filing fee remains the same at $50,000. According to James An, current President of KAFLA, the election to choose the 37th president will be held on December 7 from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.
The detailed schedule includes: Candidate filing document distribution (October 23-25); Voter registration period (October 28-December 2); Candidate filing day (November 6); Candidate supplemental filing day (November 7-8); Candidate number drawing (November 12); Ballot by mail day (November 15); and Observer registration day (December 2).

“The bylaws revision committee was formed through an interim board meeting on September 24 and reported the revisions to the board four times, and the board approved the revisions on September 16,” said Jeff Lee, Executive Director of KAFLA. “There are no major changes, but in order to reduce the cost of the election, we reviewed the estimated expenses to bring them down from $100,000 to $80,000.” Among the revised election management regulations is a new provision that allows prospective candidates to raise funds online.
KAFLA has begun preparing for the election as the schedule has been finalized.
The election committee includes Dong Mouk Yim, Jean Choi, and Soonhwan Choi, all board members of the nonprofit. From outside organizations, Yongho Kim, President of the Southern California Korean American Food Association, Junbae Kim, President of the Heritage of Korean Independence Northwest USA, Sam Shin Senior Vice President of the Council of Korean Churches in Southern California, and Rae Jin, Executive Director of Anderson Munger Family YMCA, were named.
