Korean films and TV programs excelled at the 57th WorldFest-Houston International Film Festival, held from April 23 to 28, securing 38 awards. Among these, JTBC’s feature documentary “Deep Criminal” clinched the Grand Remi Statue in the Best Television, Cable or Web category.
Aired on JTBC in October 2023, “Deep Criminal” explores the current and future prospects of crimes exploiting rapidly developing generative AI technology. The documentary, hosted by JTBC reporter Yun Seok Lee, is part of JTBC’s special program series.
The documentary has attracted significant attention due to the recent surge in crimes using generative AI technology.
The Korea Communications Standards Commission praised “Deep Criminal,” stating it “vividly shows viewers the two-sided nature of AI through various interviews and experiments, while raising awareness of AI-related crimes.”
A total of eight films received the Grand Remi Statue at the festival, with “Deep Criminal” being the sole Korean film to win the Grand Prize. Out of the eight, five Grand Remi Statues went to American productions, with Korea, China, and Portugal each securing one.
Additionally, CJ ENM / Studio Dragon’s “Summer, Love Machine, Blues,” aired in July 2023, garnered two awards for best editing and a special jury award for foreign language. Meanwhile, SBS’s “Unanswered Questions” received a gold award for Investigative Journalism, TV, Cable Web, Productions.
