H Mart will open its largest store in the United States in Northern California, marking a major expansion of the Asian supermarket chain’s footprint in the Bay Area.

In a press release issued on June 20, H Mart announced plans to develop a flagship location at the Pacific Commons Shopping Center in Fremont. Construction is scheduled to begin in the second half of this year.

The new store will span approximately 100,000 square feet, equivalent to about 1.3 regulation soccer fields, making it the largest H Mart location nationwide. Designed as a multi-level mixed-use retail complex, the space will go beyond traditional grocery shopping to include a large food hall, full-service dining, and cultural and entertainment offerings.

H Mart selected a highly visible site on the western side of Pacific Commons, near the intersection of Bunche Drive and Interstate 880.

The Fremont location will introduce H Mart’s first curated food hall concept, bringing together fast-casual eateries, full-service restaurants, bars, and entertainment facilities under one roof. The company said the goal is to create an immersive cultural destination that blends food, shopping, and shared experiences rather than serving solely as a grocery store.

While H Mart currently operates multiple stores across Northern California, this will be its first entry into the Fremont market.

“H Mart aims to enrich lives through Asian heritage, food, and culture, and the Fremont store represents a new turning point in that journey,” said Brian Kwon, president of H Mart. “By combining high-quality dining with community-focused spaces, we hope to create a premier culinary destination where people of all backgrounds can gather and connect. Our top priority is to provide the Fremont community with a convenient one-stop shopping experience and exceptional food and service.”

Rick Hun, vice president of leasing at Vestar, the operator of Pacific Commons, said the flagship store will elevate the shopping center’s regional profile.

“This representative H Mart location will help position Pacific Commons as one of Northern California’s premier shopping destinations,” Hun said. “Working with Heitman and the City of Fremont, we are focused on expanding experiential spaces and content that energize the center and deliver positive experiences to the broader community.”

Raj Salwan also welcomed the announcement, calling the project a meaningful addition to the city.

“We are excited to welcome H Mart to Fremont,” Salwan said. “This flagship store will bring together shopping, dining, and entertainment in a vibrant hub where residents and visitors alike can gather and enjoy the city.”

The new H Mart will repurpose a large vacant retail space within Pacific Commons, which is already home to major national retailers such as Target and Costco. Company officials say the project reflects H Mart’s broader strategy to lead the next generation of experience-driven retail and redefine the future of modern grocery shopping.

Founded in 1982 with its first store in Woodside, New York, H Mart now operates more than 100 stores across 18 states.
