For the first time in the New York Police Department (NYPD), a high-ranking Korean police officer has been appointed.
According to the NYPD and the Korean Consulate General in New York on June 27, NYPD Inspector Chungyoon Huh has been nominated for promotion to Deputy Chief.
On June 28, Huh will be officially informed of her new position at a promotion ceremony. She will transition from her role overseeing a police precinct to a senior position managing inspectors.

The rank will also be changed from “The Eagle,” which symbolizes the Inspector of Police, to one star, equivalent to the general-level in the military.
The NYPD is the largest police force in the United States, comprising 36,000 officers and 19,000 civilian employees. She was hired in 1998 as the NYPD’s first Korean-American female officer.
She advanced her career while working in areas with significant Korean populations, such as Manhattan and Queens. In 2022, she became the first Korean-American Deputy Inspector. She was promoted to Inspector in late 2023 and to Deputy Chief six months later.
Committed to serving New York City to the best of her abilities, she emphasized, “I am pleased to see Korean Americans in the NYPD being recognized.”
