Toronto police have arrested Korean American Junhee Jeong, 21, in connection with a suspected hate-motivated assault that took place near Bathurst Street and Baycrest Avenue on September 27, 2025, according to the Toronto Police Service and local media. Officers responded at approximately 7:30 p.m. after receiving a report of an assault in the North York area.
Investigators say the suspect was a passenger in a moving vehicle when he allegedly assaulted a pedestrian walking on the sidewalk. Police report the suspect directed racial slurs at the victim, who was identifiable as a person of Jewish faith at the time. Authorities are treating the incident as a suspected hate-motivated offence.
Jeong, who is Korean American, was arrested on November 12, 2025, and charged with assault. He is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice, 10 Armoury Street, on January 7, 2026, at 2 p.m. in room 202.
The Hate Crime Unit leads investigations when police believe an offence may have been motivated by bias, prejudice, or hate. If a person is charged and convicted, judges may consider hate as an aggravating factor when determining a sentence. Police note that offences such as wilful promotion of hatred or advocating genocide require the consent of the Attorney General and may be laid at a later time.
