Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) data shows workplace deaths 2024 totaled 5,070 domestically, with medium- and heavy-duty truck drivers accounting for 798 fatalities.

The BLS said the 2024 total was down 4.0% from 5,283 deaths in 2023.
Motor vehicle-related occupations recorded the most deaths by job category, with 1,018 fatalities. Within that group, medium- and heavy-duty truck drivers accounted for 798 deaths.
Vehicle-to-vehicle crashes fell from 1,252 in 2023 to 1,146 in 2024, a decline of 8.5%. Over the same period, pedestrian deaths involving vehicles rose from 310 to 369, up 19.0%.
Construction workers recorded 788 deaths. Landscaping and groundskeeping workers recorded 239.
Logging workers and fishing and hunting workers recorded 53 and 24 deaths, respectively.
By cause of death, the data recorded 470 homicides and 263 suicides. Another 410 deaths were linked to drug or alcohol overdoses.
Deaths tied to exposure to harmful substances or hazardous environments declined from 820 in 2023 to 687 in 2024, a decrease of 16.2%.
