Verizon agrees to $100 M settlement over junk fees, users get up to $100 each

Verizon has agreed to settle a class action lawsuit involving junk fees, making customers eligible to receive up to $100.

The lawsuit accused Verizon of imposing administrative charges on customers as part of a ‘deceptive scheme.’ Despite denying these allegations, Verizon agreed to a $100 million payout to affected users.

Eligible individuals include U.S. Verizon customers who, between January 1, 2016, and November 8, 2023, were subjected to and paid an Administrative Charge and/or an Administrative and Telco Recovery Charge for postpaid wireless or data services.
Contrary to prepaid plans, postpaid plans involve signing a contract with the provider, with monthly billing based on usage. People who qualify should have also received a notice by mail or email.

To file for compensation, claimants must enter their notice ID and confirmation code as provided in the settlement notice. The deadline to submit a claim is April 15 at the settlement website.
The amount each claimant will receive vary based on the total number of approved claims filed.

According to Verizon’s fact sheet from October last year, the company boasts 92.7 million ‘wireless retail postpaid connections’ within its consumer segment and an additional 29.5 million in its business sector.

eligible customers are expected to receive a minimum payment of $15, the settlement website states. This amount may increase by $1 for each month of service usage, with a cap of $100.

Once the settlement is finalized, eligible customers will receive their payments by check or electronic payment.
