The Sound of Silence: Why 73,000 Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrids Are Heading Back to the Dealer
In the world of electrified vehicles, being quiet is usually a badge of honor. However, for certain Toyota owners, their cars might be too quiet for comfort. Toyota has officially issued a Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid Recall covering approximately 73,528 vehicles due to a faulty pedestrian warning system that may fail to activate while the car is in reverse.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the affected SUVs—specifically certain 2023–2025 model year Corolla Cross Hybrids—fail to meet the minimum sound requirements set by Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard.

The Risk: An “Invisible” Reverse
The issue stems from the vehicle’s Acoustic Vehicle Alerting System (AVAS). While the system is designed to emit a specific hum to alert nearby pedestrians, researchers found that in some units, the sound is either too quiet or non-existent when backing up.

The good news for owners is that the solution doesn’t require any heavy mechanical work. Toyota will resolve the issue through a free software update at local dealerships.
