Tax Filing Season Opens Jan. 26

Deadline Set for April 15; No Disaster-Related Extensions in California

The 2025 federal income tax filing season will officially begin on Monday, Jan. 26, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) announced.

The IRS said it will start accepting tax returns filed electronically and by mail on that date. As in previous years, the deadline to file and pay any taxes owed is April 15.

Taxpayers who need more time may request an automatic six-month filing extension, which moves the filing deadline to October. However, any taxes owed must still be paid by April 15 to avoid penalties and interest.

Taxpayers who live or operate businesses in federally declared disaster areas may qualify for automatic deadline extensions, with due dates varying depending on the timing and location of the disaster. Updated information by state is available on the IRS website.

As of the first week of January, however, no areas in California have been granted tax filing or payment deadline extensions due to natural disasters, according to the IRS.
