Sushi Zanmai, one of Japan’s most recognized sushi chains, is set to open its first U.S. location in Koreatown, Los Angeles.

The new restaurant will occupy the former space of Sake House by Hikari inside Chapman Market, located at the intersection of 6th Street and Alexandria Avenue, according to local dining outlet Eater LA.
The restaurant applied for a liquor license in February 2025, and signage was installed by late May, signaling visible progress. Although an official opening date has yet to be announced, the windows remain covered in brown paper, indicating ongoing interior construction.
Sushi Zanmai was founded in 2001 at Tokyo’s iconic Tsukiji Fish Market, quickly gaining fame for its 24-hour operation model—a novelty that attracted both locals and tourists. Over the years, the chain has expanded across Japan, now operating more than 40 locations.
The company’s CEO, Kiyoshi Kimura, earned the nickname “Tuna King” after famously paying ¥333.6 million (approximately $2 million) for a single bluefin tuna at the 2019 New Year auction.
Sushi Zanmai’s arrival adds to Koreatown’s growing list of high-profile international restaurant brands and reflects the continued demand for premium Japanese cuisine in Los Angeles.
