The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has opened submissions for the 2025 Student Academy Awards competition. The deadline for entries is May 18, 2025.

The 52nd Student Academy Awards will take place at the Ziegfeld Ballroom in New York City on October 6, 2025, during the New York Film Festival. Rolex is sponsoring the event, continuing its commitment to supporting emerging filmmakers. Last year, the ceremony was in London.
The competition accepts entries from full-time and part-time undergraduate and graduate students who completed an intermediate or final graduation film as part of their coursework. Starting this year, certificate program students can also submit their final projects. The Academy has also removed the accreditation requirement for schools.
Students must submit films through FilmFreeway, a widely used platform for festivals and competitions. Judges will evaluate entries in four categories: Animation, Documentary, Live Action Narrative, and Alternative/Experimental. The Academy will announce the winners in August 2025.
Winning films qualify for the 98th Academy Awards in the Animated Short Film, Live Action Short Film, or Documentary Short Film categories. Since its launch in 1972, the competition has helped filmmakers gain industry recognition. Past winners have received 69 Oscar nominations and won 15 awards.
