Spices That Will Make Your Dishes Special

If you are to proceed from beginner-level cooking to intermediate, it’s time to enter the world of spices. If you wonder about usages of the following spices after encountering them once in a while, read this, grab these, and cook!

1. Cayenne pepper powder
Cayenne peppers are small, spicy peppers that grow in South America. Cayenne pepper powder can be used in chili sauce, mixed with lemon juice, salt, garlic powder, and pepper. You can also use it as a base for Kansas-style barbeque. Simply mix brown sugar, paprika powder, pepper, salt, chili powder, garlic powder, and onion powder with cayenne powder and apply on your favorite barbeque meats.

2. Cumin powder
Cumin powder, which sometimes becomes a base for curry, has strong scent that is perfect for cheese and lamb meat. When serving Chinese lamb skewers, serve them with a mixture of pepper power and cumin powder. You can make a Chipotle-style steak with a seasoning made with dried chipotle pepper, oregano, coriander, onion powder, dried orange peels, and cumin powder.

3. Sumac powder
Sumac powder is an essential spice in Persian dishes. Sour flavor of Sumac powder goes well with spiciness. Garlic, olive oil, cinnamon powder, cumin powder, salt, pepper, and sumac powder massaged on chicken make a perfect dinner.

4. Coriander powder
Coriander powder, which is one of the oldest spices, is powder of cilantro seeds. You can use it with steamed fishes or oysters to remove bad smells. Sweetness of coriander powder makes it also suitable for apple pies.
