According to the U.S. Department of Justice, Filmore Doyoon Kim (40) sent a threatening email in February to a probation officer with the Washington State Department of Corrections. Shortly after, he attempted to purchase a handgun from a firearms dealer. On the application form, he falsely stated he had no criminal convictions. A background check revealed his felony history, prompting the dealer to notify police.

A federal court in Seattle sentenced Kim to 18 months in prison, followed by three years of supervised release. Judge Lauren King called his repeated threats of violence “extremely serious crimes” and described him as a “threat to public safety.”

Kim had a prior conviction in 2022 for breaking into a neighbor’s home and violently assaulting the resident in front of a 4-year-old child. At the scene, he left a death threat written in blood. Authorities also confirmed that he previously harassed apartment managers with similar threats.

The case was jointly investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the Washington State Department of Corrections.
