Violinist Esther Yoo (31) has been appointed professor of strings at the Royal Academy of Music in London, according to a statement released on September 9 by concert management company Mast Media. She is the first musician of Korean heritage to join the Academy’s faculty. Founded in 1883, the institution is a leading conservatoire under royal patronage that has trained generations of world-class performers.
Yoo first gained international recognition as the youngest prizewinner at the 2010 International Sibelius Violin Competition and the 2012 Queen Elisabeth Competition. In 2018, she served as Artist-in-Residence with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, strengthening her presence in the British classical music scene.
The Royal Academy of Music praised her appointment, saying: “Esther Yoo’s wide-ranging solo career and diverse recording experience will further enhance the strengths of our strings faculty.” Yoo said through Mast Media: “I am delighted to continue my international solo career while also working with the next generation of violinists.”
