A new survey found that oven cleaning is the household task adults most want to avoid, even during holidays when many finally have time to catch up on chores.

A survey of 2,000 North American consumers by Norwex showed that 44% of respondents ranked oven cleaning as the most disliked chore. It was followed by shower cleaning at 39%, window washing at 38%, toilet cleaning at 32%, and mopping or vacuuming at 23%.
The results also showed that 71% of all respondents delay household chores for more than a month. In addition, 37% said they would rather file taxes or get an oil change than tackle cleaning tasks.
When asked why they put off chores, 35% said they have a habit of procrastinating. Another 26% said they are too tired, 15% said they lack time, and 12% said chores are simply boring.
Differences between age groups also appeared. About 18% of Gen Z respondents said they clean to film social media videos, while Millennials, Gen X, and Baby Boomers said they clean mainly when expecting guests.
Experts warn that postponing oven cleaning can lead to serious risks inside the home. Paul Christophi, co-founder of FC Fire Prevention, said built-up grease can easily ignite under high heat. He added that clogged burners in gas ovens may produce carbon monoxide, and smoke or mold can irritate the respiratory system.
Daniel Vasilevski, CEO of Pro Electrical, advised wiping down the oven after each use and doing a thorough cleaning every three to six months. He recommended using spill-prevention trays and cleaning up food spills immediately.
Experts also noted that while some ovens have a self-cleaning function, the extremely high temperatures can cause parts to wear or create smoke. They said the safest approach is to combine regular manual cleaning with careful use of the self-clean cycle. They also recommended baking soda and vinegar as eco-friendly options, while stressing that strong chemical cleaners should only be used with proper ventilation.
