Director Na Hong-jin will helm a new film “Hope” with Michael Fassbender and Alicia Vikander joining the cast.

Na, who directed the critically and commercially acclaimed classic “The Chaser” (2008), the Cannes-selected “The Yellow Sea” (2010) and the equally successful “The Wailing” (2016), which won him the Best Director award at the 37th Blue Dragon Film Awards, will direct Fassbender, Vikander and Korean actors Hwang Jung-min, Zo In-sung and Hoyeon, from the hit Netflix series “Squid Game” (2021).

“Hope” will tell the story of residents in a small port town who face a mysterious attack on the village. After witnessing an unknown being standing on the outskirts of the village, the residents go through a desperate struggle to protect themselves from destruction.

“We often see good intentions clashing from different perspectives, ultimately leading to catastrophe,” said Na in a press release Thursday. “Our film tries to capture this phenomenon, and we plan to show a work that has never been seen before.”

Fassbender, an Irish-German actor, has played roles in a number of award-winning films including “Inglorious Bastards” (2009), “A Dangerous Method” (2011) and “12 Years a Slave” (2013) and in global franchises such as the “X-men” series and the “Alien” series. Vikander, a Swedish actor, achieved global recognition for roles in “Testament of Youth” (2014), “Ex Machina” (2014), “The Danish Girl” (2015) and “Jason Bourne” (2016).
