The City of Los Angeles lifted the downtown curfew on June 17, one day after pushing the curfew start time to 10 p.m.
In a statement issued that day, Mayor Karen Bass said, “The curfew and crime prevention measures have effectively protected shops and residential areas,” adding, “As of today, the curfew is lifted, but I am prepared to reinstate it if necessary.”
Although the curfew has been lifted, Mayor Bass retains the authority to reimpose it at any time. That authority comes from an emergency resolution that the Los Angeles City Council unanimously approved on June 17. The resolution grants the mayor power to impose or lift curfews specifically in the downtown area.
Under the City Charter, such a resolution must receive City Council approval within seven days of the initial declaration. After that, it must be reviewed every 10 regular council meetings and cannot remain in effect for more than 30 days without renewed approval.
Councilmember Ysabel Jurado has requested that the matter be brought back for discussion at the council’s July 1 meeting.
