Police shootings in Los Angeles continue to rise even after Karen Bass and the LA Police Commission expressed concern about the trend. New figures from LAPD show the increase has persisted through November 29.
According to LAPD crime statistics, officers were involved in 40 police shootings from January 1 to November 29, a 55% increase from 26 in the same period last year. Of those 40 cases, 30 involved gunfire that struck a suspect or another person, and 13 people died.
By the end of September, LAPD reported 32 police shootings. Over the next two months, the total rose by 11 to 43. The source does not clarify how this total aligns with the earlier figure of 40 through November 29 and may require editor review.
In December, LAPD recorded three more police shootings in Reseda, Westlake, and Lake Balboa, resulting in two deaths.
As fatalities increased, Karen Bass promised new measures. In comments sent to NBC4, her office said it was “deeply concerned about the increase in OIS incidents” and would review each case closely.
The LA Police Commission said it views the rise in police shootings as serious because it contrasts with declining violent crime. This year, homicides in the Los Angeles area fell by 62 compared to last year.
