LA fills 3-year gap, appoints Steve Kang as film industry liaison

Steve Kang, chair of the Los Angeles Board of Public Works, has been appointed as the new LA film industry liaison, filling a position left vacant for about three years. Mayor Karen Bass announced the appointment on August 27, assigning Kang to strengthen the city’s connection with the film and television sector.

Kang stressed Los Angeles’ global role in entertainment. “Los Angeles is the world’s hub for the entertainment industry,” he said. “I will support the growth of film, television, and advertising production, and improve production conditions to help boost the city’s economy.”

The liaison’s main duty is to simplify filming permits and regulatory procedures so production companies can operate more efficiently within the city. The role has become increasingly important as rising costs, wages, and regulatory pressures have led some studios to move filming outside Hollywood.

Kang will coordinate with city departments under the Board of Public Works, including the Bureau of Engineering and the Bureau of Street Services, while also engaging with chambers of commerce and community groups to minimize conflicts during filming.

He will also oversee the final installation of plaques on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. To date, only two Koreans have received stars: Philip Ahn, who worked in Hollywood during the 1930s to 1950s, and comedian Ken Jeong.
