Korean American Teens Lead Koreatown Free Tutoring Program for Local Youth

A group of Korean American high school students in Koreatown is launching a free tutoring program serving multiethnic youth in the community.

The youth volunteer organization National Youth Community Center (NYCC) announced at a press conference on October 23 that it will begin offering the program every Saturday from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. starting November 15. Classes will take place on the fourth floor of the NYCC office at 4055 Wilshire Blvd and are open to students from first to ninth grade.

The curriculum includes English, math, coding, robotics, and a book club. Korean American high school students who have excelled academically—some of whom are award-winning robotics competitors—will lead the sessions, offering both subject instruction and college preparation guidance.

The program is jointly organized by NYCC, Boston Education (led by Sue Byun), and the multicultural nonprofit California Rising (chaired by Raul Claros).

“Programs like this, where Korean and Latino youth learn side by side, mark the beginning of true community integration,” said Claros. “Although both Korean and Latino immigrants settled in Koreatown during the 1970s and 1980s, they have remained largely disconnected. This initiative aims to bridge that gap across generations.”

Byun added, “It’s meaningful for Korean American high school students to share their talents with children who may not have access to sufficient educational resources due to economic hardship.”

This Koreatown free tutoring program has no enrollment limit and is open to all interested students. While on-site registration is available, advance sign-up is encouraged for planning purposes. NYCC plans to expand the program across Koreatown by increasing the number of classes and subjects offered.
