Korean fugitive arrested in Buena Park after U.S. federal agents detained a South Korean national who had allegedly been living in the United States illegally while evading an embezzlement warrant issued in Korea.
Authorities said the arrest took place on March 20 in Buena Park, a Southern California city with a large Korean American population.
According to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), the suspect was identified as Bohyun Cho, a South Korean citizen who was wanted in Korea on embezzlement charges.
Federal Agents Carry Out Arrest
The operation was conducted by special agents from Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), the investigative arm of ICE.
HSI’s Los Angeles field office said the Korean fugitive arrested in Buena Park was located based on information provided by the South Korean government.
Officials confirmed that Cho was unlawfully present in the United States at the time of the arrest.
“HSI special agents arrested Korean fugitive Bohyun Cho in Buena Park, California, on March 20,” ICE said in a statement posted online.
Facing Return to South Korea
Authorities said Cho has an outstanding arrest warrant in South Korea related to alleged embezzlement. He is expected to be returned to Korea to face justice in his home country.
However, officials have not disclosed details about the alleged embezzlement case, including the scale of the financial losses or the specific circumstances surrounding the charges.
Investigation Details Remain Limited
Authorities also have not released information regarding when Cho entered the United States or how long he had been residing in the country.
Additionally, the timeline and procedures for his deportation or extradition have not yet been announced.
