Korean-Canadian Celine Song’s ‘Past Lives’ earns five Golden Globe nominations

‘Past Lives’, a film by Korean-Canadian director Celine Song, has been nominated in five categories for the Golden Globes Awards.

On December 11, the film was nominated for Best Motion Picture – Drama, Best Director – Motion Picture, Best Screenplay – Motion Picture, Best Motion Picture – Non-English Language, and Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama (Greta Lee), for the 81st Golden Globes Awards.

Starring Korean-American actress Greta Lee and Korean actor Teo Yoo, Past Lives is a story about a couple who reunite in New York City 20 years after being separated as children.

Miky Lee, Vice Chairwoman of CJ Group, also participated in the production of Past Lives as an executive producer.

Past Lives first premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival to rave reviews. The film was invited to compete at the Berlin International Film Festival and won the Best Feature at the Gotham Awards, an independent film and drama awards ceremony, in New York last month.

At the Golden Globes, Past Lives stands out with multiple nominations, following ‘Barbie’ (nine), ‘Oppenheimer’ (eight), ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’ (seven), and ‘Poor Things’ (six).

In the Best Motion Picture – Drama category, Past Lives competes with Cannes Film Festival’s Palme d’Or winner ‘Anatomy of a Fall’ and Grand Prix winner ‘Zone of Interest’, ‘Maestro’, Killers of the Flower Moon, and Oppenheimer.

Song will compete in the Best Director category with Christopher Nolan for Oppenheimer, Greta Gerwig for Barbie, Martin Scorsese for Killers of the Flower Moon, Bradley Cooper for Maestro, and Venice Film Festival’s Golden Lion-winning director Yorgos Lanthimos for Poor Things.

In the Non-English Language award category, nominees including Past Lives are Anatomy of a Fall, Zone of Interest, Cannes Film Festival Jury Prize winner Finnish film ‘Fallen Leaves’, Venice Film Festival Silver Lion winner ‘Io Capitano’, and Spanish film ‘La Sociedad De La Nieve(Society of the Snow)’.
