Cyndi Munson, Democratic Minority Leader in the Oklahoma House of Representatives, officially announced her candidacy for governor, marking a historic moment in the Korean American Oklahoma governor race.
If elected, Munson would become the first Korean American governor in U.S. history.

Background: From California to Oklahoma Leadership
Born in Monterey, California, the 40-year-old Munson was raised in Oklahoma. She is the daughter of a U.S. military veteran father and Shin Yoo-Ja, her Korean-born mother. Munson and her younger sister grew up embracing a blend of American and Korean cultural values.
Munson graduated from the University of Central Oklahoma and earned a master’s degree in leadership education from the University of Nebraska.
Campaign Launch: A Call for Change
On April 15, standing with her family in front of the state Capitol, Munson emphasized the urgent need for change in Oklahoma, stating, “There is no way to save Oklahoma without real change.” She highlighted the state’s education ranking—47th nationally—and stressed the critical need for greater support.
Political Landscape: A Tough Battle Ahead
Oklahoma politics are heavily dominated by conservatives. The Republican Party has led the state for the past 20 years. In the Oklahoma House, 81 of 101 members are Republicans, while 40 of the 48 Senate seats are held by Republicans. Current Governor Kevin Stitt is also a Republican.
Munson first entered the House representing District 85 in 2015 and has served as the Democratic Minority Leader for the past three years. She became the first Asian American elected to the Oklahoma Legislature and notably defeated a Republican incumbent with 54% of the vote.
A Proud Connection to Korean American Roots
Reflecting on her heritage, Munson said, “California remains my hometown, and I take great pride in the generous spirit and warmth passed down from my mother.” She expressed hope that minority groups, including Korean Americans, would have more opportunities to amplify their voices despite facing difficult times.
Election Outlook: Munson as the Democratic Frontrunner
The upcoming gubernatorial election is expected to feature a contest between a major Republican candidate and a Democratic challenger. Within the Democratic Party, Munson currently faces no primary opposition ahead of the preliminary election scheduled for June 2026, making her likely to advance as the party’s nominee.
