Korean American nonprofit hosts Dementia Care Education Session

On August 29, Somang Society, under the leadership of President Boon Ja Lee, initiated a Korean-language Alzheimer’s Disease and Dementia Care Education program at Leisure World, a senior living community in Seal Beach.

Held in the complex’s auditorium, the session drew an audience of over 60 attendees, comprised of Koreans and Korean Americans.

Titled “Dementia Friends,” this inaugural program aimed to educate individuals about dementia. Its purpose was to cultivate understanding, foster friendships with, and offer assistance to those struggling with cognitive disorders or diagnosed with dementia.

The dementia education initiative, pioneered by the Somang Society at Leisure World, has garnered support from the Alzheimer’s Association, Orange County Chapter. This program is set to continue one to three times a month for the next three years. It will encompass various aspects like brain health education, support for family caregivers, guidance on advance healthcare directives, and strategies for managing unusual behaviors in seniors.

“Our focus will be on dementia prevention. Concurrently, we will conduct family caregiver meetings and provide an array of resources,” commented the organization. Additionally, Somang Society will administer memory tests for Korean Americans showing early signs of dementia and furnish individualized consultations when required.
