Titled “Bang! K-webtoon,” the stateside exhibition will feature popular webtoons such as “Navillera: Like A Butterfly,” “True Beauty” and “The Red Sleeve,” all of which have also been adapted for television. In particular, “Navillera: Like A Butterfly” was nominated for the Best Webcomic category at the 2022 Will Eisner Comic Industry Awards.
The exhibited webtoons are mostly set in historical time periods in Korea, which will be displayed alongside records detailing the past that they are based on.
The exhibition on “The Red Sleeve,” a romantic story set in the royal court during the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910), will be shown aside materials on the lives of women who were in the court, in cooperation with the Seoul Museum of History, and the traditional Korean hanbok clothes provided by the Cultural Heritage Administration.
“We hope that holding cartoon exhibitions in connection with overseas missions will serve as an opportunity to promote Korean webtoons, respect cultural differences and promote exchange across borders,” said Shin Jong-cheol, president of the Korea Manhwa Contents Agency, in a press release.
