Interim Chief Dominic Choi officially sworn in as first Asian LAPD head

On March 1, Interim Chief Dominic Choi was sworn in as the 58th Chief of the LAPD.

Interim Chief Dominic Choi is the first Korean American and first Asian American in LAPD history.

Choi, born in LA as the son of Korean immigrants, officially joined the LAPD in 1995 and has served in various positions leading up to his latest appointment.

Choi’s swearing-in ceremony was attended by a number LAPD officers, Mayor Karen Bass and Choi’s family. The ceremony featured Choi’s father pinning the badge onto Interim Chief Choi’s uniform.

Interim Chief Choi has announced that he will not run for the permanent position. Mayor Karen Bass and the Police Commissioners will continue the search for the next LAPD Chief in an expedited and deliberate manner, especially in the critical time leading up to the 2026 World Cup and 2028 Olympics.
