The platform analyzed brands operating 100 or more locations nationwide, using metrics such as review volume, star ratings, and regional preferences. Loyalty within local communities also played a major role in the rankings. Yelp stated, “Each brand on the list shows its own unique appeal through distinct regional styles and operating models.”

In-N-Out, The Habit, and Shake Shack Take Top Spots

Leading the list is In-N-Out Burger, known as the “Western legend.” Founded in 1948, it has earned strong loyalty through a simple, well-executed menu. Its unofficial Animal Style fries remain a customer favorite. Yelp reports the brand has gathered more than 120,000 reviews across over 400 locations.

The Habit Burger Grill, which began in Santa Barbara, placed second. Its flame-grilled Charburger—featuring a smoky patty, tomato, lettuce, pickles, onions, and mayonnaise—earned praise nationwide. The chain also ranked second in the Northeast, including New York.

Coming in third was Shake Shack, originally a hot dog cart in New York. Now a global brand, it’s known for the ShackBurger, made with Angus beef, a potato bun, and a signature sauce. It ranked first in 21 states and Washington, D.C., and its original New York location has over 5,800 reviews.

Regional Favorites and Chains in the Top 25

Island’s Fine Burgers & Drinks, based in Southern California, ranked fifth. It features a surf-inspired atmosphere and standout burgers like the Maui Burger, which combines teriyaki sauce, grilled pineapple, and Swiss cheese.

Other nationally recognized chains in the top 25 include:
Five Guys (6th), Red Robin (10th), Jack in the Box (11th), Smashburger (16th), McDonald’s (17th), Sonic (18th), Burger King (19th), White Castle (20th), Fatburger (21st), Wendy’s (22nd), Carl’s Jr. (23rd), and Checkers (24th)—many of which are familiar to Southern California residents.

Yelp also released regional rankings. In the Western U.S., the top three spots went to In-N-Out, Shake Shack, and The Habit. In Southern California, chains like Culver’s and Freddy’s—despite having fewer local locations—ranked fourth and fifth, reflecting strong popularity in surrounding Western states.
