Hyundai Motor Group Safety Awards Crush IIHS Tests

Steel Shield: How Hyundai Motor Group Safety Awards Just Redefined Road Survival

The 2026 IIHS Safety Awards haul is in, and it looks like the Korean automotive giant didn’t just pass the test—they broke the curve. In an era where the IIHS keeps moving the goalposts, Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis have emerged as the ultimate overachievers, securing a staggering 16 awards—the highest of any manufacturer group globally.

Raising the Bar (and Clearing It)

This wasn’t a “participation trophy” year. The IIHS significantly tightened its criteria, demanding better protection for back-seat passengers and near-flawless pedestrian crash prevention. Despite these hurdles, 15 models from the group secured the coveted TOP SAFETY PICK+ (TSP+) rating, while one earned the TOP SAFETY PICK (TSP).

Hyundai led the charge with seven winners, including the electric IONIQ 5 and the massive IONIQ 9. Their secret sauce? The “SmartSense” suite—featuring Lane Keeping Assist and Forward Collision-Avoidance—comes standard, proving that safety isn’t a luxury; it’s a baseline.

Luxury Meets Longevity: Genesis and Kia Shine

Genesis continues to prove that “premium” should mean “protected,” with its entire lineup—including the GV60, GV70, and G80—earning straight TSP+ honors. Not to be outdone, Kia dominated the SUV and sedan segments with the EV9 and Sorento also sweeping the top-tier ratings.

What is perhaps most impressive is the Hyundai Motor Group’s performance in the “affordable” segment. While high-end safety often carries a high-end price tag, the Kia K4 (starting at just $22,290) was named the most affordable TSP+ winner in the industry. Other budget-friendly heroes like the Elantra, Sonata, and Kona also kept their price tags under $30,000 without compromising on structural integrity.

The Bottom Line

With 63 total winners industry-wide this year—a 30% jump from last year—the competition is getting stiffer. However, by securing over a quarter of the top spots, Hyundai Motor Group has sent a clear message: whether you’re driving a luxury Genesis or a commuter-friendly Kia, they’ve got your back (and your front, and your sides).
