Son Heung-min made an immediate impact in his MLS debut, earning a decisive penalty that salvaged a draw for Los Angeles Football Club (LAFC) against Chicago Fire FC on August 9 at SeatGeek Stadium in Illinois.

The Korean forward entered as a substitute in the 61st minute, replacing David Martinez with the score tied 1-1. Almost immediately, the 33-year-old attacker showcased his world-class talent, drawing cheers not only from LAFC supporters but also from Chicago Fire FC fans. About 20,000 spectators filled the stadium, rising to their feet and chanting his nickname “Sonny,” while Korean American fans waved Taegukgi (the South Korean flag) in support.

In the 66th minute, the veteran winger recorded his first MLS shot on target with a left-footed strike from outside the box.

Chicago regained the lead in the 70th minute through Jonathan Bamba, but just moments later, the former Tottenham Hotspur star collected a pass in midfield, burst past two defenders with explosive speed, and charged into the penalty area. After being brought down by a tackle, a video review confirmed the foul, awarding LAFC a penalty. Denis Bouanga converted from the spot to level the score at 2-2.

The match ended in a draw, with the forward’s decisive play ensuring LAFC avoided defeat. The club will next face the New England Revolution in an away match on August 16 in Massachusetts.

Following the game, Son Heung-min spoke to the press, with The Korea Daily as the only Korean media outlet in attendance.

Q&A with Son Heung-min

Q: How do you feel about your debut?
Son Heung-min: “I’m glad I could play my first match so soon after joining. The result was a bit disappointing, but it was an exciting and great game. I’ll work on my fitness and mentality to be ready for next week’s game against New England. Even though this was an away match, I received a warm welcome. In the Premier League, away games often come with boos, so I’m thankful for all the fans who cheered today.”

Q: Many Korean Americans came to see you today.
A: “It was incredible. This was my first time playing in Chicago, and I saw many Korean American fans, as well as Taegukgi flags in the stands. Seeing that made me proud to be able to play today.”

Q: How was it reuniting with Hugo Lloris?
A: “It was amazing—what more can I say? We spent eight years together, sharing many experiences and emotions. Hugo Lloris is an outstanding player both technically and as a person. He’s a huge asset to our team, and it’s an honor to keep playing alongside him.”

Q: With the excitement around you, will you become an MLS ambassador?
A: “It would be an honor, but not every away fan will like me. (Laughs) I’m not about to become an ambassador right away, but I want MLS to grow. Joining LAFC was part of wanting to be involved in that growth.”
