With Thanksgiving just around the corner this year, the race is on for low prices for Thanksgiving meal packages at large food chains.

This year, a standard Thanksgiving dinner for 10 people, including turkey, stuffing, salad, cranberries, dinner rolls, and pumpkin pie, costs $90 total, down 0.5% from last year. Retailers’ private brand product was about 19% cheaper at $73. The Aldi dinner set for 10 was the most competitive at $47.

Among many others, Target, Sam’s Club, Walmart, and Aldi are leading the competition for affordable prices for Thanksgiving dinner.

Target: $20 for four
This year’s Thanksgiving dinner from Target is the lowest ever at $20 for four, $5 less than last year. Its menu is made up of a mix of its own Good & Gather and other branded products, including a frozen turkey (up to 10 pounds), potatoes, canned green beans, mushroom cream soup, cranberry sauce, stuffing mix, and gravy.

“The most expensive in our Thanksgiving dinner bundle, turkey has been gradually dropping in price from its pandemic peak with a 20 percent discount down to 79 cents per pound,” said Rick Gomez, Chief Commercial Officer at Target.

Aldi: $47 for serving 10
Aldi launched its most affordable Thanksgiving dinner set in five years. Its meal pack for 10 is $47, or $4.70 per person. The dinner includes all the traditional Thanksgiving classics including turkey, gravy, dinner rolls, macaroni and cheese, cranberries, stuffing, mashed potatoes, sweet potato casserole, green bean casserole, and pumpkin pie. The turkey is priced about $2 less than at Walmart.

“With 25% of all households now shopping at Aldi, grocery prices are a top concern for our customers,” said Jason Hart, CEO of Aldi.

Recent consumer trends have shifted from branded to private-label products. More than 90% of Aldi’s products are private-label.

Walmart: $56 for a family of 8
Walmart is offering a Thanksgiving dinner set for eight for less than $7 per person. The set includes 29 items including an 88-cent-per-pound turkey with cranberry sauce, green beans, mushroom soup, muffin mix, onions, and sweet potatoes. Walmart’s Thanksgiving dinner is available in stores and online, with express delivery in 30 minutes. You can also send Thanksgiving dinner to family and friends across the country.

Sam’s Club: $100 for 10 people
Sam’s Club has launched a Members’ Mark Thanksgiving dinner set for 10 people for under $100. It includes a pre-cooked smoked turkey, mashed potatoes, pumpkin pie, mashed sweet potatoes, Brussels sprouts, dinner rolls, mac and cheese, and cranberry crunchy salad, all made with Sam’s Club’s own branded Member’s Mark products.

“Our customers are looking for the best deals, but they’re also looking for quality,” said Myron Frazier, Senior Vice President of Sam’s Club Private Brand and Sourcing, ”and we can deliver Thanksgiving dinner in less than two hours.”
