“Socialism Kills”: Greg Abbott Defends Texas Policies on Crime and Immigration at CPAC

Texas Governor Greg Abbott delivered a powerful and clear message at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) on March 27, drawing a sharp line against progressive ideologies.

“Socialist policies kill people. We will not allow that experiment in Texas,” Abbott declared.

Addressing the crowd at the heart of the conservative movement, Abbott emphasized that keeping Texas “Texas” is not merely a matter of political theory, but a matter of tangible results. He argued that the “failures of progressive policies” have already left a trail of real-world damage that Texas refuses to replicate.

Governor Abbott used specific examples to illustrate the dangers of lenient judicial practices. He criticized progressive judges for releasing dangerous criminals, noting instances where individuals arrested for murder committed additional homicides after being set free.

“This is the direct result of socialist-leaning criminal justice policies,” Abbott pointed out.

To combat this, Texas has moved to solidify its legal standards. Last November, Texas voters passed Proposition 3, a state constitutional amendment that allows judges to deny bail to persons accused of certain violent or sexual crimes. Abbott highlighted that his administration is committed to community safety over ideological debates, ensuring residents feel the impact of these legislative protections.

The Governor’s commitment to safety extends to law enforcement funding. While cities like Dallas, Austin, and Houston saw internal movements to slash police budgets, the Texas state government intervened.

“We passed a law that reduces state funding for any city that dares to defund their police,” Abbott stated.

He argued that when law enforcement is weakened, it is the law-abiding citizens who suffer. This stance serves as a direct rebuttal to the “Defund the Police” movement that gained momentum in Democratic-led cities following the George Floyd protests.

Abbott also revisited his controversial but high-profile 2023 policy of busing undocumented immigrants to self-proclaimed “sanctuary cities.” He recalled the instance when Texas sent 42 migrants from countries like Venezuela and Guatemala to Los Angeles.

According to Abbott, this move “exposed the hypocrisy of the Left.” He noted that while these cities initially campaigned on platforms of protection and welcome, they are now buckling under the economic and social weight of the migrant crisis—burdens that Texas border towns have faced for years.

On the topic of education, Abbott insisted that schools remain student-centered rather than centers for political indoctrination. He emphasized that students’ education should prioritize reading, writing, math, and science, not Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) policies. The Governor defended the clear distinction between male and female, arguing that a student’s right to a basic education should not be compromised by gender politics.

Responding to critics who label his policies as “far-right,” Abbott remained firm. He argued that the shifts in Texas policy are simply common-sense reactions to the “proven failures” of progressive immigration, crime, and education strategies.

“The reason we uphold conservative values is that they are the best choice for our citizens,” Abbott concluded.
