‘Giant Killer’ Steven Choi takes oath as California State Senator

Steven Choi, newly elected California State Senator for the 37th District, officially began his term on December 2 after taking the oath of office.

Choi, who attended a welcome dinner hosted by the Senate caucus on December 1, made his formal debut the following morning with the swearing-in ceremony.

Reflecting on the dinner, Choi remarked, “Unlike the Assembly, I was warmly welcomed by Senate Democratic Leader Mike McGuire and Republican Leader Brian Jones. The atmosphere was one of surprise, as many noted my return to Sacramento after defeating an incumbent.”

Within the Republican Party, Choi earned the nickname “Giant Killer” for his underdog victory. With a modest campaign fund of around $400,000, he managed to defeat a well-funded opponent who reportedly spent $7 million.

“While money is important, the true winners are the residents of my district who supported the Republican cause,” Choi stated. “As promised, I will do my best to represent the Korean American community.”

Choi also said that he has submitted applications for six standing committees and is in the process of negotiating his assignments within the Senate.
