A recognition ceremony was held at Fullerton City Hall to honor Changhwan Chun, 75, a former South Korean Marine who recently bravely fought off two robbers who chased him to his home.

“On behalf of all the citizens of Fullerton, I commend and thank Mr. Chun for his bravery and courage in stepping up to the challenge for the safety of our community,” said Fullerton Mayor Fred Jung. During the ceremony, James Ko, Chair of the Fullerton Investment Advisory Committee, and Chun’s family members congratulated Mr. Chun.

On June 4, two male robbers followed Chun to his home in broad daylight and threatened him with pepper spray. However, Chun managed to fight off the robbers.

Surveillance video from Mr. Chun’s garage shows that as he arrived home and was about to close the back door of his car, two men suddenly approached him and sprayed him in the face with pepper spray. In a situation that would have caused most people to retreat, Mr. Chun took a few steps back and began to throw punches at the robbers. Surprised by his unexpected response, the robbers fled, and soon neighbors arrived to help Chun.

“I just did what anyone would do, and I’m grateful to receive a certificate of recognition for my actions from the Korean-American mayor, which I didn’t expect,” said Mr. Chun, who received the certificate.

Meanwhile, Mayor Jung and Chairman Ko strongly urged Fullerton Police Chief Robert Dunn to increase patrols and enhance security in the area.
