[Exclusive] Denis Bouanga on His LAFC Success and Chemistry with Son Heung-min

At LAFC, there’s another powerhouse beside Son Heung-min — Denis Bouanga, one of MLS’s most dynamic scorers and a driving force behind the club’s attack. Even before Son joined, Bouanga had already established himself as a standout player and fan favorite. Since then, the duo’s connection has sparked excitement among new Korean and Korean American fans. On October 3, The Korea Daily met Bouanga at LAFC’s Performance Center to talk about his career, family, and the growing bond that’s captivating the stands.

Q: What made you decide to become a soccer player?

A: “I was deeply influenced by my older brother. He quit soccer early, but he used to take me to the stadium and helped me discover the beauty of the game. The turning point came when we went to watch a match between Le Mans FC and Marseille on my birthday. That experience was the spark that made me choose to become a soccer player.”

Q: You were born and raised in France, but you chose to represent Gabon.

A: “I had to choose between the French national team and Gabon. My friend Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who was also born in France but plays for Gabon, encouraged me to join. Gabon is my father’s homeland, and representing the country where my family roots lie gives me immense pride. It’s one of the best decisions I’ve ever made in my life.”

Q: You came to MLS for your family and a better life.

A: “I believed MLS offered the best opportunities for both my career and my family. That’s why I decided to make the move, and I have no regrets. In fact, I’m truly happy with that choice. My wife and two kids love life in LA — they don’t want to leave. Seeing my family happy means everything to me, and that’s a big reason why I want to continue my career here.”

Q: What does LAFC mean to you?

A: “It’s the club that brought me to America, so I feel a great sense of gratitude. The first month was tough — adjusting to the culture, language, and time difference wasn’t easy. But now, I feel very comfortable here, and it keeps getting better.”

Q: Did you feel any pressure about competing for your position after hearing Son Heung-min was joining?

A: “Honestly, I never expected him to come here. Son is a player who can thrive anywhere. When I heard the news, I was genuinely happy. Everyone knows how exceptional his talent is. Having a player like him on our team is a huge boost. I’m truly happy to play alongside him.”

Q: Have you heard about the nickname “Heung-Bou Duo”?

A: “Yes, I saw it on Twitter. I know that fans in Korea call us that by combining our names.”

Q: You and Son Heung-min seem to have become close very quickly.

A: “Everything just clicked naturally. We connected from the start. On the field, his level is so high that syncing with him isn’t difficult. Off the field, he’s a genuinely kind and humble person. He’s easily one of the best teammates I’ve ever had at LAFC.”

Q: Do you meet outside of games as well?

A: “Yes, we hang out often and stay in touch through messages. As we’ve spent more time together, our bond has grown stronger, and that chemistry really helps us perform better on the field.”

Q: Your front-flip celebration has become iconic.

A: “Before becoming a footballer, I used to do breakdancing. The front flip is one of the tricks I learned back then. My friend Aubameyang does a similar celebration, so I thought, ‘This could be my signature move,’ and I’ve kept doing it ever since.”

Q: Doesn’t doing that every time strain your legs?

A: “(Laughs) Not at all. I’m always ready for it.”

Q: What is your ultimate goal as a player?

A: “I want to be a decisive player every time I’m on the field. I want to bring joy to my fans and family and be remembered in a meaningful way. Most importantly, I want to be known as a player who always gives 100%.”

Q: Do you have a message for Korean soccer fans?

A: “I’m truly grateful and honored for all the love and support I receive from Korean fans. I feel your warmth both on the field and through social media. I promise to assist Son Heung-min as much as I can so he can score even more goals. And if I ever get a chance to play in Korea someday, I would be thrilled to step onto that pitch.”
