Skyline Surgery: The 55-Story “Centro Westlake LA” Is About to Transform MacArthur Park
The historic Westlake district is gearing up for a vertical revolution. Los Angeles city officials have officially greenlit a massive high-rise mixed-use project that promises to redefine the silhouette of the MacArthur Park area. Known as Centro Westlake LA, this ambitious development by Walter J. Company and LA Metro is set to rise at the intersection of Wilshire Boulevard and Alvarado Street, creating a futuristic “city within a city” on a 150,000-square-foot lot.
A Dual towers Giant with a Social Conscience
Designed by the world-renowned architectural firm SOM (Skidmore, Owings & Merrill), the development features two striking towers reaching heights of 55 and 39 stories (approx. 450 to 600 feet). But Centro Westlake LA isn’t just about gleaming glass and steel; it’s a massive play for urban density and housing equity.
The project will deliver 668 residential units, ranging from cozy studios to spacious two-bedroom apartments. In a significant win for the community, 234 of these units are earmarked for low-income housing, addressing the city’s urgent need for affordable living spaces in transit-rich areas.
More Than Just Housing: A New Mobility Hub
This isn’t your average apartment complex. The blueprints for Centro Westlake LA include a diverse ecosystem of amenities:
-
Hospitality: A 300-room luxury hotel for travelers.
-
Workspace: 105,000 square feet of office space plus 10,000 square feet dedicated to medical suites.
-
Retail Therapy: 56,700 square feet of retail space, with a generous 20% reserved exclusively for local Westlake small businesses.
-
Infrastructure: A parking garage for 968 vehicles and a central “Mobility Hub” designed to integrate seamlessly with the adjacent Metro station.
The Future of Westlake
At the heart of the site, a large east-west open plaza will serve as a public breathing room, featuring event spaces and stalls for local vendors. Experts believe this “transit-oriented development” will breathe new life into the Westlake/MacArthur Park corridor, boosting local commerce while providing much-needed housing near public transit.
Nearly a decade after Walter J. Company first envisioned high-rises in this area, the dream is finally taking flight. As Centro Westlake LA moves toward construction, the neighborhood is preparing for a new era of growth that reaches for the clouds while keeping its roots in the local community.
