At Knott’s Berry Farm, the Boysenberry Takes Center Stage Again

Each spring, Knott’s Berry Farm turns unmistakably purple. The annual Knott’s Boysenberry Festival, which opened March 13 and runs through April 12, returns with an expanded lineup of food, drinks and entertainment built around the berry that has long defined the Buena Park theme park. This year’s event features more than 100 boysenberry-inspired menu items ? many of them new ? underscoring the fruit’s enduring role in the park’s identity. For Knott’s, the boysenberry is more than a seasonal ingredient. It is a signature tied to the park’s origins, with a relationship approaching its 100th anniversary. The festival, held each late winter and early spring, has evolved into a monthlong culinary showcase where chefs experiment with both familiar and unconventional uses of the fruit. Laura Brubaker, the park’s vice president of food and beverage, said the menu has grown dramatically over the years, expanding from a handful of items to dozens, and now surpassing 100 offerings. The approach, she said, is rooted in creativity. The result is a wide-ranging menu that incorporates boysenberry into savory dishes, desserts and beverages alike. Among the options are items such as boysenberry barbecue meats, bulgogi served over rice, and comfort foods like brisket paired with macaroni and cheese. Sweet offerings and drinks also feature prominently, including lemonades, frozen treats and cocktails infused with the berry. Visitors can sample selections through a tasting card program, which provides multiple small servings from booths located throughout the park. Beyond the food, the festival offers a slate of family-friendly activities and performances. Guests can visit Old MacDonald’s Barn to see farm animals, explore the history of the berry at an on-site exhibit, and browse handcrafted goods at a festival market featuring local vendors. Children and families can take part in interactive games and contests, including a pie-eating competition. Live entertainment remains a central draw. The Bird Cage Theatre presents a melodrama, while evening performances at the Calico Mine Stage highlight the park’s history through music and storytelling. Organizers say the programming is refreshed each year to keep the experience dynamic for returning visitors. Taken together, the festival reflects Knott’s ongoing effort to celebrate its agricultural roots while reimagining them for a modern audience ? one boysenberry dish at a time.
