Beware of unlicensed contractors in fire recovery zones

The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office urges residents affected by the 2025 wildfires to be careful when hiring a contractor to work on home repairs or rebuilding.
There are many unlicensed construction industry contractors who take advantage of people who are vulnerable, especially in disaster zones. It can be hard to tell the difference between licensed and unlicensed contractors who offer to perform work on your home.

But it is important to only hire licensed contractors and protect yourself during fire-related rebuilding and repairs. Unlicensed contractors might not do the work they say they will. They might not perform the work safely. They might damage your home. They might leave you to foot the bill.

To protect yourself from being taken advantage of, hire only licensed contractors. Check to ensure the contractor has a license with the California Contractor’s State License Board by calling (800) 321-CSLB (2752). You can also report illegal activity at this number.
Take your time when deciding to hire a contractor. Do not let yourself be rushed by scammers.

Together, we can rebuild our neighborhoods safely.
