On September 13, U.S. Representative Andy Kim (D-NJ) visited Los Angeles for a campaign fundraising event. During his visit, Kim addressed the current state of the presidential election and his own Senate race, while also listening to key concerns from his Korean American supporters. Emphasizing the challenges ahead, Kim urged the Korean community to stay engaged and continue their participation.

The following is an edited excerpt from the Q&A session:

– How is the presidential election progressing?
“The Asian and minority communities on the East Coast are excited to see an Asian American woman leader challenging for the White House. I believe we can expect positive outcomes. While there are many partisan claims and slogans, the most important thing is to have a leader who cares for the people’s welfare. That leader is Kamala Harris.”

– It’s been reported that you are campaigning alongside Robert Menendez, son of former Senator Bob Menendez, who resigned amid corruption charges.
“Rob Menendez ran an effective primary campaign and has become a respected leader. While there may be differing views regarding his family, we share the same basic philosophy regarding political activity. I have officially endorsed him and often campaign together.”

– New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy has not yet publicly endorsed your Senate run.
“What matters most is winning over the hearts of the voters. I have never asked any politicians, including Governor Murphy, for their endorsements. His decision is his own. For me, what’s important is meeting voters day by day, house by house, and sharing my thoughts.”

– Unfortunately, there was an incident in New Jersey similar to the Yong Yang police shooting in LA, involving Victoria Lee.
“It’s a tragic and shocking event. I spoke with Lee’s parents after the incident. They expressed their sorrow, saying they called an ambulance, but instead, the police arrived and a shooting occurred. Local police and investigators are looking into the details of the case, and I will continue to closely follow the investigation.”

– Is there anything Congress can do about such incidents?
“I believe Congress must address this issue. We need to discuss whether there were any systemic problems. Additionally, language and cultural barriers played a role in escalating this situation, especially for immigrants. Eliminating these barriers is a challenge we all need to address together. I’m ready to provide any necessary assistance—just let me know.”
