A Korean-American teenage girl lost vision from illegal Fourth of July firework

A teenage girl, who is believed to be Korean-American, lost her sight while watching fireworks this past Fourth of July.

Taylor Kim, 18, of Fullerton, was celebrating the Fourth of July with her family on July 4 when someone lit a powerful firework next to her and it supposedly malfunctioned and exploded, severely injuring her left eye, according to CBS News.

Now a month out of high school, Kim wears sunglasses to cover the stitches in her left eye. “If this hadn’t happened, I was going to finish my internship and volunteer work at Kaiser and go into Biola in the fall to pursue a career as a nurse,” she said. “But I’m not sure about continuing that path.”

The doctor who treated Kim reportedly said there is no guarantee that her vision will return to normal.

No information has been released about how the fireworks went off or who may be responsible. Kim’s family said they are focused on her vision recovery and upcoming surgery and are trying to figure out how to fund her lifelong care.

Kim’s family has set up a GoFundMe page to raise money for her medical expenses at [Support Taylor Kim’s Vision Recovery].
