The Academy Awards faces backlash after the 98th ceremony organizers abruptly cut short the acceptance speeches for the Netflix animated hit “KPop Demon Hunters” (2025) on Sunday. Despite making history with two major wins, the celebratory atmosphere was quickly overshadowed by controversy when several winners were denied the opportunity to speak on stage.

Historic Wins for KPop Demon Hunters
At the ceremony held at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, “KPop Demon Hunters” secured prestigious wins for Best Animated Feature Film and Best Original Song for the track “Golden.” These victories marked a milestone for Korean representation in Hollywood, with co-director Maggie Kang delivering a moving tribute to “Korea and Koreans everywhere.”
However, the mood shifted during the presentation of Best Original Song. As singer-songwriter EJAE handed the microphone to her fellow collaborators after her emotional remarks, the orchestra began playing the “exit music,” effectively signaling the winners to leave the stage.
Controversy Over “Play-off” Music
As the Academy Awards faces backlash from global fans, critics have pointed out the disparity in how different categories were treated. While winners in major categories like Best Actor or Best Picture often receive more leeway with time, the “KPop Demon Hunters” team—including co-lyricist Mark Sonnenblick and composers from The Black Label—were played off while holding prepared notes.
Korean broadcaster Ahn Hyun-mo, who hosted the local coverage, expressed disappointment during the live stream. “We heard much longer acceptance speeches earlier in the night for the short film category,” Ahn noted, highlighting what many perceived as an unfair “diss” toward the K-pop production team.

Global Fan Reaction and Industry Critique
CNN reported that the incident “is sure to have angered K-pop fans,” noting that a history-making moment was undercut by poor timing. Social media platforms were flooded with criticism, with many users describing the move as “disrespectful” and “unprofessional.”
Despite the stage interruption, the film’s success remains a significant achievement. Experts suggest that “KPop Demon Hunters” has successfully bridged the gap between cultural diversity and massive popular appeal. However, the recurring issue of Academy Awards faces backlash regarding its treatment of “below-the-line” or international winners continues to be a point of heated debate in the industry.
