More than 2,000 people have signed up to join a planned U.S. federal class action lawsuit against Coupang Inc., the U.S.-based parent company of Coupang, over a large-scale personal data leak incident.
According to SJKP, the domestic affiliate of Korean law firm Law Firm Daeryun, a total of 2,346 applicants had expressed their intention to participate as of December 12th. SJKP previously announced at a press conference held at its Manhattan office on December 8th that it plans to file a consumer class action lawsuit against Coupang Inc. in a U.S. federal court in New York.
The applicants reportedly include a significant number of U.S. citizens and permanent residents. SJKP said many plaintiffs already participating in a separate class action lawsuit in Korea have also indicated they intend to join the U.S. case at the same time, and the total number of participants is expected to increase.
Major reported cases submitted to SJKP so far include spam text messages disguised as recruitment promotions for Coupang logistics part-time jobs, phone calls guiding recipients to participate in events while impersonating Coupang, and alerts of attempted logins to Coupang accounts from other countries or unknown devices.
SJKP said it is working with Law Firm Daeryun with the goal of submitting the complaint to federal court before the end of the year. Participation in the class action is available through the SJKP website at www.sjkplawfirm.com.
Attorney Donghoo Son, who is leading the lawsuit, said the drafting of the complaint is in its final stages. He said the firm is analyzing submitted cases to determine whether the plaintiffs meet eligibility requirements in federal court and plans to use the U.S. discovery process to try to show that Coupang’s U.S. headquarters exercised key authority over security and risk-related investments, in order to hold the company accountable for failures in oversight and management.
