The Mulberry has opened in Sawtelle Japantown near Santa Monica, bringing a Korean-based modern bistro that combines traditional Korean flavors with local ingredients.

According to food media outlet Eater LA, the Korean American couple Jennifer Chon and David Lee jointly operate The Mulberry, which opened on November 12 in Sawtelle Japantown. The name Mulberry is inspired by the mulberry and paper mulberry trees used to make hanji (traditional Korean handmade paper).
Chon said, “Hanji symbolizes the durability and identity of Korean culture. We wanted our food to reflect that feeling.”
The menu at The Mulberry features familiar Korean tastes that are refined in a modern way and combined with local ingredients. Dishes include Korean Aguachile with Santa Barbara red tilefish served in kimchi broth, Soy Marinade of Blue Prawn served with barley rice, and Pacific Oyster with kelp mignonette, showcasing the localization of Korean cuisine. Other popular offerings include Spicy Silken Tofu Stew with wagyu sirloin, Steak Tartare in a stone pot, Spicy Braised Black Cod, and charcoal-grilled Pork Sparerib.
The cocktail menu also draws attention by incorporating Korean elements. Signature drinks include the “Sikhye Slushy,” made with pisco, cinnamon, and ginger; the “Burdock Penicillin,” which combines double oak bourbon, burdock tea, and lemon; and the “Sujunggwa Manhattan,” which uses cinnamon, ginger and rum.
Chon said she hopes the space becomes “a place that naturally reflects the food, drinks, and culture we enjoy as Korean Americans.”
The Mulberry is open Wednesday through Sunday from 5:30 p.m. to 10 p.m.
