The Los Angeles Lakers opened their 2025–26 campaign with a press conference at the UCLA Health Training Center, where General Manager Rob Pelinka confirmed a contract extension for head coach JJ Redick and reviewed the team’s summer moves.

Pelinka said the organization wanted to demonstrate clear confidence in Redick, who led the team to 50 wins in his debut season. “We think he’s a special coach with a special voice that’s really helping us to continue to define the culture of Lakers excellence,” he said. The terms of the new deal were not disclosed.
This offseason was also about securing the core roster. Luka Doncic signed a three-year, $165 million max extension that includes a player option for the 2028–29 season, while LeBron James opted into the final year of his contract. The front office also added Deandre Ayton, Marcus Smart, and Jake LaRavia. “From a roster standpoint, we were able to address some goals,” Pelinka said. “Getting a starting center, adding a couple of really good wings, and clearly getting an extension done with Luka, in addition to having LeBron choose another year with the Lakers as opposed to entering free agency, are all positive and productive things for us as a basketball team.”

Redick reflected on his offseason following last year’s first-round playoff exit. “The two words that immediately popped into my mind are philosophy and methodology,” he said, explaining how he spent the summer refining his coaching approach. He also emphasized conditioning as a key theme. “We’ve asked all our guys to be in championship shape and championship mind… the commitment level across the board from our team has been very high.”
On expectations, he said the pressure is always present in Los Angeles. “You come into this building every day, and you’re constantly reminded of what Lakers excellence is. That doesn’t change.”
Pelinka praised Doncic’s leadership with Slovenia at EuroBasket, while Redick said he expects him in top form for camp. Pelinka added that the team respects James’ long-term decision-making, stressing they would love him to retire in purple and gold. Redick said James is “in a great spot mentally” and ready to give his best. Austin Reaves also drew praise, with Redick noting staff reports that he has been “the best player in the gym every day” this summer, pointing to his improved strength and athleticism.

The Lakers will hold Media Day on Monday before opening the preseason on October 3 against the Phoenix Suns at Acrisure Arena in Greater Palm Springs, followed by home games at Crypto.com Arena and a matchup in Las Vegas against the Dallas Mavericks. “This is the start of another chapter for us,” Pelinka said. “We’re ready to get going.”
