President Donald Trump said on June 27 that if any conflict arises with North Korea, he would resolve it, emphasizing his close relationship with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.

Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office on June 27, Trump responded to a question about whether he had recently sent a letter to Kim. “I get along very, very well with him,” he said. However, he did not confirm whether a letter had actually been sent.

Trump reiterated his positive rapport with Kim, stating, “I’ve maintained a good relationship with Kim Jong-un. We’ve really gotten along well. Let’s see what happens.” He added, “Some people call this a potential conflict. If there is one, I believe we would resolve it.”

Trump’s comments came as he hosted foreign ministers from the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Rwanda at the White House to mark a U.S.-brokered peace agreement between the two African nations.

“If conflict does occur, it will not involve us directly,” Trump said. “Again, we are far from many of the places where we help resolve issues. But I enjoy doing this work—it’s the right thing, and we have the capability to do it.”

Trump has frequently highlighted his personal diplomacy with Kim during his presidency, including multiple summits and a historic meeting at the Korean Demilitarized Zone. His latest comments suggest a continued interest in promoting stability on the Korean Peninsula through direct engagement.
