Paul Seo, Vice Mayor of Rancho Palos Verdes (RPV) and the city’s first Asian American to hold this role, has announced his candidacy for California State Assembly District 66 in next year’s election.

Earlier this month, Seo officially declared his run for the 66th Assembly District, which covers the South Bay area. The district stretches north to south from Rolling Hills to El Segundo and east to west from Carson to Redondo Beach, including cities with large minority populations such as Torrance, Gardena, Hermosa Beach, and San Pedro. According to the 2020 U.S. Census, the district’s residents are 46% White, 26% Asian Pacific Islander, and 21% Latino.
Seo is a graduate of West Point, served in the U.S. Army, and earned a law degree from Loyola Law School. He worked as a California prosecutor before winning his seat on the RPV City Council in 2022. In December 2023, he was appointed Vice Mayor, becoming RPV’s first Asian American Vice Mayor.
After experiencing the 1992 LA Riots, Seo said he became interested in politics and now seeks to expand his public service by joining the state legislature.
“I learned a lot while investigating and prosecuting corrupt politicians, and I am taking on this challenge to build a better society,” Seo stated. “Helping residents affected by natural disasters such as landslides has given me greater confidence.”
A member of the Democratic Party, Seo has two children with his wife Hannah, who is a pediatrician.
Seo has received endorsements from U.S. Senator Adam Schiff, U.S. Representative Dave Min, California State Treasurer Fiona Ma, and State Assemblymember Mark Gonzalez.
