North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has ordered his military to complete preparations for war, following his inspection of a large-scale tactical drill involving special forces and other military units.
According to Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) on May 13, Kim observed a combined arms training exercise that included special operations forces, tank units, and live-fire demonstrations. The drills were conducted as part of a training program linked to the country’s seventh conference for military officers.
The exercise took place at the 60th Training Ground of the Capital Defense Corps and was attended by top military officials, including Defense Minister No Kwang-chol, Chief of the General Staff Ri Yong-gil, and Director of the General Political Bureau Jong Kyong-taek.
During the event, Kim Jong-un emphasized the establishment of a scientific combat training system. He described the “anti-imperialist class front” as the most important battlefield for the Korean People’s Army, asserting that the military’s most vital mission is to complete war readiness. “Combat training,” he stated, “is the foremost revolutionary task.”
Kim also highlighted the “All-Purpose Battalion Standard,” a designation believed to be granted to high-performing combat units. He met with soldiers from a special forces unit under the 11th Corps who had achieved this status, offering encouragement and posing for commemorative photos.
Photos released by state media showed soldiers operating drones and snipers in camouflage gear, suggesting that the North Korean military may be sharing tactics and equipment learned through its reported involvement in the Ukraine war.
However, alongside advanced equipment, footage also included scenes resembling choreographed strength demonstrations—such as a soldier smashing a stone placed on his forehead with a pickaxe.
In another notable detail, a bodyguard standing near Kim was photographed carrying what resembled a nuclear briefcase, adding to the visual messaging of heightened readiness.
