Korean-American teenagers donate $1,000 raised from flea market to foster care children

Korean-American teenagers donated $1,000 raised from a flea market to the Korean American Family Services.

On November 16, the youth of the Rotary Interact Club of Koreatown District 5280, an organization of Korean-American youth, visited the Korean American Family Services and donated $1,000 for children in foster care.

The club members are engaged in volunteer activities mainly in the Koreatown area. On October 6, 2019, the youth members, including President Joanne Heo (12th grade, New Covenant Academy), held a flea market at LA City College to raise funds to help foster children.

Members collected their favorite clothes, shoes, bags, books, dolls, and toys. They then informed the people who visited the flea market about the purpose of their event and raised $1,000 by selling second-hand items.

Although it was the first time for some, none expressed any complaints about the fundraiser.

“I was excited to organize the items we brought to the flea market booth, price them, and sell them,” said 11th grader Jayden Jung of Ramon C. Cortines School of Visual and Performing Arts. ”This was a valuable experience for me to help my neighbors in need through this small act of sharing.”

“The Rotary Interact Club is an organization that strives to make our community better,” said Heo, ”I hope that the $1,000 will help provide basic necessities for children in foster care at the Korean American Family Services.”

The Rotary Interact Club is open to all students in grades 8-12. Members engage in community service and leadership development activities.
