LA Metro is about to embark on a larger-scale rollout of advanced technology to improve ridership.
According to ABC7, the Metro Board of Directors recently announced the expansion of a pilot program to increase rider safety with measures such as smart restrooms and metal detection technology.
The smart restrooms will be free, but riders will have to scan a QR code upon entry. The code can be received by texting it to a cell phone. The board plans to expand the 10 smart restrooms currently in operation to 64 train stations and transit facilities.
Advanced metal detection sensors are also in place to ensure further safety of riders. They use an electromagnetic field to detect metal or a device with sensors and artificial intelligence technology to find weapons. The pilot will begin at two Metro stations.
The move comes in the wake of a recent spike in shootings, assaults and other incidents on Metro, as well as concerns about poor sanitation.
The board previously expanded the “TAP-to-Exit” feature, which was piloted at North Hollywood Station, to 10 stations.
