Samsung to create new type of semiconductor for humanlike AI

 

Samsung Electronics will “create an entirely new type of semiconductor” through its two recently established labs dedicated to artificial general intelligence (AGI), according to CEO Kyung Kye-hyun on Tuesday.

The CEO in charge of the company’s chip business said the two labs — one in Korea and one in the United States — dedicated to the advanced form of AI that can learn, reason and solve problems like a human will be led by former Google engineer Woo Dong-hyuk.

The labs “endeavor to create an entirely new type of semiconductor: one specifically designed to meet the incredible processing demands of future AGIs,” Kyung said through a LinkedIn post.

“Initially, the AGI Computing Lab will focus on developing chips for large language models with a focus on inference and service applications.”

Big Tech firms like Google and Meta as well as OpenAI and SoftBank have publicly announced their commitment to developing their own AGI chips, which must be able to process much more data at more efficient energy levels compared to the current graphic processing units available.

In order to achieve this, Kyung said the two labs will be “revisiting every aspect of chip architecture, including memory design, lightweight model optimization, high-speed interconnectivity, advanced packaging and more.

“Our plan is to continuously release new versions of our AGI Computing Lab chip designs, an iterative model that will provide stronger performance and support for increasingly larger models at a fraction of the power and cost,” Kyung said.
